LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

VISION. What is the long-term vision? The vision for this year? For this issue? Sometimes we need to destroy something in order to build something strong and beautiful. After chaos comes creation. After breakdown comes breakthrough. At least that's what I like to tell myself. And so far, it always has proven to be true. But once you are in the middle of that chaos, that draining force washing over you, in the core of a tornado, that is described as a tight, cylindrical area of extremely low atmospheric pressure surrounded by the strongest tangential winds, you can’t see nor imagine even a glimpse of light.

I have been there. You have been there. We all have. And I think it is fundamental to be in that state of being in order to envision, furthermore, enliven our dreams. No construction without destruction. Well, in the last year our office was more of a destruction site than a construction site. A lot of rearranging, reordering, piles of work that sucked energy. I dislike—no, I despise—workdays where you can’t see a single hint of a result, where everything just seems indifferent. I also have patience tattooed on my wrist as a careful reminder because I know it's part of the process to feel stuck from time to time. Nevertheless—as I pointed out—it's quite dark in the core of a tornado and difficult to hold onto a flashlight to guide the way. Leaving the office in my mind and regarding the broader picture, I can’t ignore the weight of the world. These are no topics to cut short, but to articulate my feelings briefly, I can name a few words such as grief, anger, a state of shock, and hope.

I know it's difficult to enVISION a better place, but I am part of the ones who still have the privilege of safety. I have a place to live without being endangered, so I have the time to gather strength to at least remain hopeful. I regard this as a duty, to remain HOPEFUL for the ones who are forced to live a life in permanent fear, and might lose the very last glimpse of that driving force called hope.

With hope comes Vision, or actually, with vision comes hope. I like to journal my personal vision. It gives me clarity and pushes me forward. In a time where many areas feel destructed, we felt the necessity to bring VISION onto the table. Asking people what they envision can be very magical; the sparkle in their eyes becomes contagious. I wanted more of this constructive and powerful energy. We met sculptors, DJs, rappers, singers, fashion designers, filmmakers, photographers, restaurant owners, and enthusiasts. Speaking to multiple artists about their individual vision produces a form of source that, once gathered, creates a very strong and beautiful force. This is ISSUE #004 VISION.

I dearly hope that together we envision a place where equality reigns, while looking forward from a place of hope, love, and passion.

Warmest regards from the head office
